Dynamic, collaborative and insightful:
our in-house experts

SOL Environment was founded in 2010 by Steve Butler, following more than a decade in the heavy industry and environmental sectors. The vision behind SOL was to provide a consultancy business that supported the development of sustainable and low-carbon infrastructure and the circular economy.  Since then, the team has expanded significantly, and there are no signs of the sector slowing down.

How we work

In organisational terms, the SOL team is divided into two sub-teams: Sustainability & Carbon, and Regulatory & Permitting. Each of these sub-teams, in turn, has a specific person as team lead:

  • Sustainability: Sam Hunt
  • Permitting: Sophie Rainey
  • Carbon: Charlie MacKnight
  • Planning: Dudley Saunders

Often, a new project will initially fall within the single remit of one of these team leads. However, as each project evolves over its life cycle, in-house team members from different areas will come on board as required. Where necessary, we also incorporate trusted experts from our network of associates. Our approach is flexible, multidisciplinary, and always highly collaborative.

Where we are

SOL’s main office is in Bristol, and that’s where most of our team members are based. But depending on each project’s needs, we work together with colleagues and specialists across the whole of the UK.

Who we are

We’re a friendly, dynamic team and we love to do things together. The culture in our office is highly inclusive; we all enjoy a good reason for a social get-together, and we strengthen our bonds through fun office activities. These include Bake-Offs, sampling the local pub quizzes, and regular team socials.

Though we come from different backgrounds and specialisms, we have plenty of shared interests at SOL Environment. Property and architecture, films and TV, climbing, kayaking and cycling are all favourite water-cooler topics at our Bristol office.

Our in-house experts cover a range of areas, including:
